One Combination therapy means that for the treatment of a disease several medications or methods at the same time can be used.
Goals:
- Better efficacy due to different mechanisms of action
- lower risk that pathogens resistant become
- Reduction of side effects if the medication doses can be divided up
Examples:
- HIV: Standard is the antiretroviral combination therapy (several active substances against the virus at the same time).
- Cancer treatment: Combination of Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy.
- Tuberculosis: several antibiotics to prevent the development of resistance.
