Combination therapy

One Combination therapy means that for the treatment of a disease several medications or methods at the same time can be used.

Goals:

  • Better efficacy due to different mechanisms of action
  • lower risk that pathogens resistant become
  • Reduction of side effects if the medication doses can be divided up

Examples:

  • HIV: Standard is the antiretroviral combination therapy (several active substances against the virus at the same time).
  • Cancer treatment: Combination of Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy.
  • Tuberculosis: several antibiotics to prevent the development of resistance.
