Queer is a collective term for people whose sexual orientation or gender identity does not correspond to the social norm of "heterosexual" and "cisgender".
These can include, for example
- lesbian, gay and bisexual people
- trans, non-binary and intersex people
- People with other identities or orientations outside the majority norm
Important:
- Some use "queer" as positive self-designation and expression of diversity.
- The word used to be used as a swear word. Today, many use it deliberately to show strength and community.
"Queer" is deliberately open and not narrowly defined - it encompasses different identities and experiences.
