Y chromosome

Y chromosome is one of the two sex chromosomes in humans (in addition to the X chromosome).

  • People normally have 46 chromosomesof which two are sex chromosomes.
  • Combinations:
    • XY → mostly male physical development
    • XX → mostly female physical development
  • The Y chromosome contains genes that are important for the development of the testicles and the production of male sex hormones (e.g. the SRY gene).

However, sex is not determined by chromosomes alone - hormones, gene variants and other biological factors also play a role.
