The Immune system is that Defence system of the body. It protects us from pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites as well as from damaged or altered cells.
Components:
- Organse.g. bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes
- Cellse.g. white blood cells (leukocytes), including helper cells and phagocytes
- Proteinse.g. antibodies that specifically recognise and combat pathogens
Function:
- Pathogens are recognised and rendered harmless.
- Memory cells "remember" previous infections - so you are protected more quickly the next time you come into contact with them.
- A functioning immune system is vital for maintaining good health.
Special feature of HIV:
- HIV primarily affects the Helper cells (CD4 cells) to.
- This weakens the immune system and infections can occur more easily.
