Methadone

Methadone is a artificially produced opioid (painkiller and anaesthetic). It has a similar effect to heroin or morphine, but lasts longer and is more consistent.

Utilisation:

  • Substitution therapyMethadone is prescribed to people who are addicted to heroin. It prevents withdrawal symptoms and reduces cravings without the strong "kick" of heroin. This enables a more stable life (e.g. with work, family, less drug-related crime).
  • Pain therapyIn some cases, methadone is also used to treat severe chronic pain.

Effect:

  • Alleviates withdrawal symptoms and reduces the feeling of craving.
  • Has a calming and pain-relieving effect.

Risks and side effects:

  • Can make you tired, slow down your breathing and can be life-threatening if overdosed.
  • Habituation and dependence are possible, even if methadone is administered under medical supervision.
  • Interactions with alcohol, tranquillisers or other drugs can be dangerous.
