Safer sex

Safer sex means: organising sex in such a way that the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remains as low as possible.

The most important methods include

  • Condoms and Femidome (condoms for the vagina or anus) - they protect against HIV and many other STIs.
  • PrEP (HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis) - a preventive HIV medication for HIV-negative people.
  • Protection through therapy - HIV-positive people with successful treatment (with proof of viral suppression) can no longer transmit HIV.
  • Vaccinations - e.g. against hepatitis A and B or HPV.

Safer sex therefore comprises various strategies. Which ones make sense depends on the situation, the people involved and their needs.
