Antiretroviral

The term antiretroviral refers to drugs that specifically target Retroviruses have an effect. Retroviruses are a group of viruses that also include HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) belongs.

  • Antiretroviral drugs inhibit the multiplication of HIV in the body.
  • They do not completely destroy the virus, but prevent it from spreading further.
  • This keeps the immune system stable and reduces the risk of illness.

Application:

  • Treatment with antiretroviral medication is antiretroviral therapy (ART) called.
  • If taken consistently, HIV can be suppressed to such an extent that it is no longer detectable in the blood ("below the detection limit").
  • People with effective ART can no longer transmit HIV sexually ("U = U"), undetectable = untransmittable).
