C sharp or cisgender describes people whose gender identity corresponds to the sex they were assigned at birth.
- Example: If someone is registered as "female" at birth and also sees themselves as a woman, this person is cis.
- Cis-man: Someone is registered as "male" at birth and also sees himself as a man.
- Cis woman: Someone is registered as "female" at birth and also sees themselves as a woman.
- For comparison with trans: Someone is registered as "male" at birth but sees themselves as a woman - this person is trans (not c sharp).
The term makes it clear that not all people have the same experience of gender - and that "cis" is also one of several possible gender identities.
