Helper cells

Helper cells are a certain type of white blood cells (more precisely: T lymphocytes), which play a central role in the Immune system play.

  • They recognise pathogens such as viruses or bacteria and activate other defence cells.
  • As a result, they control the Defence reaction of the body.

Special feature of HIV:

  • HIV mainly affects the so-called T helper cells (CD4 cells).
  • If these cells are destroyed by the virus, the immune system weakens.
  • The fewer helper cells there are, the more difficult it is for the body to fight off infections or diseases.
