Transsexual

The term transsexual is a older medical term. It used to be used to describe people whose Gender identity does not correspond to the sex assigned at birth.

  • Many trans people today prefer the term trans or transgenderas the word -sexual falsely gives the impression that it is about the Sexuality and not about the Gender identity.
  • The term originates from a time when transgender was often viewed primarily in medical or pathological terms.

Important:

  • Transsexual is not the same as transvestite or Travesty - It's not about clothes or stage roles, but about the Identity.
  • Some people still use the term for themselves, others reject it.
  • It can still be found in official contexts (e.g. in the German "Transsexuellengesetz"), but is increasingly being replaced by more modern and respectful terms.
