What is Doxy-PEP?

Doxy-PEP is a new strategy in STI prevention:
The antibiotic doxycycline is taken after sex to reduce the risk of certain bacterial sexually transmitted diseases - especially syphilis and chlamydia.

Doxy-PEP is not an all-purpose solution and does not replace proven safer sex strategies.

Who is Doxy-PEP suitable for?

Doxy-PEP can be helpful for people who

  • have frequently changing sex partners and are part of scenes in which bacterial STIs occur more frequently or regularly receive STI diagnoses despite safer sex strategies.

Important:

For people at low risk, Doxy-PEP not useful, as the side effects and the risk of antibiotic resistance outweigh the benefits.
Always speak to a doctor before using Doxy-PEP.

Intake & dosage

The standard dosage is 200 mg doxycycline within 24 hours of having sex.
Take with plenty of water and not on an empty stomach to avoid stomach irritation.
Important: Only after an actual risk contact, not routinely or „for safety reasons“.

Effectiveness & limits

Important: Doxycycline does not protect against 100 % and not against all infections. 

Studies show that Doxy-PEP reduces the risk of Syphilis and chlamydia can be significantly reduced.
Against Gonorrhoea Does Doxy-PEP work in Europe not. The pathogens are already „resistant“ (insensitive) to the medication. It is not effective against other sexually transmitted diseases anyway.

Risks & side effects

As with all antibiotics, side effects can occur:

  • Gastrointestinal complaints: Nausea, diarrhoea or abdominal pain
  • Sensitivity to sunlight: Skin reacts more strongly to UV light → Sun protection necessary
  • Development of resistance: Bacteria can become insensitive if doxycycline is taken too often

Therefore: Doxy-PEP only under medical supervision and Not regularly use.
