„Everything used to be better“ - This sentence certainly does not apply to gay life. Anyone who remembers Paragraph 175 or the AIDS crisis of the 1980s knows how much fear, marginalisation and inequality were part of everyday life for queer people. And yet the history of gay life in Germany is not just a story of pain and loss. It is also a story of courage, solidarity and a collective fight for more freedom. This is exactly what „Together through time“.
Two generations in dialogue
In the video, Georg and Sebastian take us on a personal journey through time. Two perspectives, two generations, one conversation: about how queer life has changed, what used to be particularly stressful and why it is worthwhile to keep in touch with each other across generations.
Memories of another life
For many older gay men, memories of a life of hiding, caution and social rejection are still present today. Anyone who looks at greater visibility, legal recognition and more open lifestyles today should not forget that these developments were hard-won. The 50-plus generation in particular has helped to create spaces in which queer life is now possible as a matter of course. IWWIT therefore also categorises the video in the thematic field of „Life in old age“ in.
At the same time, the video shows that it is not just about the past. It is also about the question of what connects younger and older queer people today. Experiences of discrimination may have changed, but they have not disappeared. Loneliness, the need to belong and the search for role models also affect different generations - albeit in different ways. This is precisely why talks like this are so important: they create understanding, build bridges and make it clear that queer history is not abstract, but lives on in biographies. This is an obvious conclusion from the IWWIT description of the video and its embedding in the field of queer life.
„Together through time“ is a reminder that progress does not fall from the sky. It comes about when people stand up for each other, organise themselves and share their stories. Today's community is built on the experiences of those who came before it. And it remains strong if these experiences are not lost.
Queer life is something common
Perhaps that is the most important message of the video: There are differences between the generations, but also a great opportunity. Those who listen can understand where we come from. Those who tell stories can pass on what carries them. And if you allow both, you quickly realise: queer life was never just individual - it was always something shared.
Queer generations in dialogue
Georg and Sebastian talk about gay life in the past and today. The video shows how important remembrance, exchange and cohesion between queer generations are.
