Basics

What is cruising?

Cruising is a queer practice - as old as the community itself. It's about encounters, desire and freedom: anonymous sex in exciting places, spontaneous adventures, playing with looks and signs.

Culture & Resistance Looks & gestures Self-determination

Whether in the park, in the darkroom or online - cruising is more than just sex. It is a piece of queer culture, resistance and self-determination: the right to live our lust.

Roaming around, observing, signalling - sometimes with a look, a gesture, touching each other, having sex. The rules are unwritten, but clear: Consensus, respect and mutual esteem are the top priority.

Cruising has a history: In times of persecution, public cruising locations were both a refuge and a rebellion.

Cruising requires self-confidence, trust, boundaries and sometimes courage. But when it succeeds, something special is created: a moment of freedom.
Access

Cruising for Beginners

If you are new: take your time. Observe first. Every location has its own codes - how to look, wait, communicate and initiate sex.

Observe Learn codes Step by step

Newcomers often experience that they are suddenly the centre of attention. This can be flattering, but also overwhelming.

You decide. A no is always okay.

Tip

Let yourself be stimulated by the internet and porn, but don't put any normative pressure on yourself.

Important

Cruising consensus

Cruising is about closeness, looks and gestures - rarely about words. This is precisely why consensus is so important.

Accept no Read signals Stop at any time

Consensus is a prerequisite: Accept a no, without discussion.

Pay attention to signals: A yes feels active. If someone freezes, it's not a yes.

Consensus is not an obstacle. It's what makes cruising good.

Manuel and Paul in conversation
about cruising as trans* masculine people
M

Manuel

As a trans* man, I hesitated for a long time. Cruising seemed to be a world for cis men. But I've learnt that desire knows no norm. The looks I get - they are real.

P

Paul

The first darkroom was a turning point for me. Nobody asked. Nobody judged. My body was simply - welcome. That was incredibly liberating.

M

Manuel

Safer sex as a trans* person is sometimes more complicated. Some people have no information about trans* bodies. Therefore: educate, ask, be open.

P

Paul

My most important tip: go where you feel safe. Queer saunas, parties with awareness teams - I'm more relaxed there.

M

Manuel

Cruising has shown me: My body belongs to me. I decide what happens. That is empowerment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about cruising

Briefly explained: the most important answers on locations, codes, consensus and security.

What is cruising anyway?
Cruising is a queer practice that is all about encounters, desire and freedom. It includes anonymous sex in exciting places, spontaneous adventures and playing with looks and signs. Cruising takes place in the park, in the darkroom or online, for example. It is more than just sex; it is a piece of culture, resistance and self-determination.
How do you communicate when cruising?
Communication when cruising is often completely wordless. A look, a gesture or a nod are often enough to communicate. Depending on the location, there are certain codes for looking, waiting and communicating in order to finally initiate sex.
How does consensus work in cruising when people hardly speak?
Even if little is said, consensus, respect and mutual esteem are paramount. Consensus means mutual, respectful communication about boundaries, pleasure and safety. A yes feels active: someone looks at you, moves towards you and reacts. However, if a person becomes silent, turns away or freezes, this is not a yes and you should withdraw without discussion. You always have the right to say no and break off an encounter.
Where does cruising take place?
When it comes to cruising, the choice of locations is huge. Typical places include public parks and green spaces, public toilets, darkrooms in bars and clubs, sex clubs, parties and saunas as well as cruising apps. The atmosphere, codes, safety and rules differ depending on the location.
What should I bear in mind as a beginner?
If you are new to cruising, you should take your time and observe first. Don't put yourself under any normative pressure and try everything out step by step. Newcomers in particular are often the centre of attention, which can be flattering but also overwhelming. You don't owe anyone anything just because someone speaks to you or looks at you, and a clear no is always okay.
How do I use cruising apps safely?
Cruising apps make it easy to search for encounters using your smartphone. Pay attention to your safety and the protection of your personal data. You decide who you give what information to. Trust your gut feeling and be sceptical about photos that are too perfect, vague answers or if someone directly asks for personal data.
