How Andreas experienced his coming out in the Bundeswehr
Andreas realised early on that he was different. But he suppressed his feelings for a long time - until a moment in Hamburg that changed everything.
"I realised very, very early on that I was different. Ever since I was a teenager. But I always suppressed it," he explains.
One evening in Hamburg, Andreas ended up in a gay shop and suddenly nothing was the same again.
"Then everything suddenly collapsed on me because I could no longer suppress it."
It took Andreas a while to realise that he was gay. It wasn't easy - especially because he was a professional soldier in the navy.
"My path has been a little unusual. I'm a professional soldier in the navy and I tell everyone who reveals themselves to me: Be careful who you tell. I know how I've suffered."
Andreas wants to encourage others with his coming out
"I think it's important to spare others at least some of this suffering through my experience."

Sometimes it only takes one person to speak openly to encourage others. Andreas shows: Even in a conservative environment like the Bundeswehr, coming out is possible and can be the beginning of a freer life.
