Berlin, 13 February 2025
Published on the occasion of the Bundestag elections on 23 February IWWIT the video "MORE SPACE: Queer & right?! How you can recognise and stop homonationalism!" and shows how right-wing populists try to appropriate queer people for their political purposes. The aim of the video: To protect queer people against appropriation and encourage them to speak out in favour of democracy and diversity.
Using homosexuality to support nationalism and racism - that is homonationalism. Queer people, mostly gay white cis men, are often pitted against other groups. A common theme is hatred of Islam. Right-wing extremist parties capitalise on prejudice, fear or hatred towards Muslims.
The video by ICH WEISS WAS ICH TU makes it clear: we can defend ourselves against right-wing populists and their propaganda!
Jeff Mannes from IWWIT:
"Right-wing populism means only one thing for queer people, as it did almost a hundred years ago: disappointment and misery! It is therefore important that we raise our voices in the upcoming federal elections. Go vote, let's defend democracy together and help make Germany a safer place for queer people - regardless of their religion or origin!"
Prevention work: always more than just a condom
Countering discrimination and marginalisation has been a task of IWWIT from the very beginning. Because both stand in the way of health-conscious behaviour and a self-determined (sex) life.
Our appeal to the community is therefore: Share this video with people around you and encourage them to choose diversity.
Campaigns for the 2025 federal election
Like IWWIT, numerous organisations are calling for the Bundestag elections. They oppose right-wing populism and call for the preservation of democracy, self-determination and a society based on solidarity.
- #DialLoveUnder this slogan, over 50 CSDs in Germany are campaigning for openness and democracy. Demonstrations will take place nationwide on 15 February. IWWIT is cooperating with the campaign.
- 1TP5VarietySelect: With its online campaign, Deutsche Aidshilfe is calling on people to go to the polls and vote for democracy and diversity - because discrimination and marginalisation make people ill.
- Because everyone counts: The Paritätische Gesamtverband makes 50 concrete proposals for a socially just policy.
